What is backflow?

Backflow is the undesirable reversal of water flow and contaminants from any location into the distribution pipes of your drinking water system.

What is a backflow assembly?

A backflow preventer/assembly is a plumbing device installed in the plumbing system to prevent contaminated water from flowing backward. Properly installed, tested, and maintained backflow preventers protect your loved ones and your community by preventing water from flowing in reverse into the community water system.

Am I required to have a backflow assembly?

Control of cross-contamination through backflow prevention is required in most applications, including irrigation water meters, multi-family housing, and all commercial and industrial properties.

Does my backflow assembly need to be tested?

If you received a backflow test notice from your Water District, you must have the test performed within the designated time period. Even without a notice, it's wise to test each backflow assembly at least once a year.

What happens if I do not have my backflow tested?

Failure to test your backflow assembly may result in fines for non-compliance, and your water service may be suspended or terminated to protect the public water system.

Why do I need my backflow assembly tested annually?

California law mandates that backflow preventers must be tested at least once a year to ensure the safety of drinking water. Testing also helps prevent larger, more expensive future repairs.

What is a cross-connection?

A cross-connection is any connection between a public water system and a non-potable water source or system containing other substances.

What is an air gap?

An air gap is a vertical, physical separation between a water supply outlet and the flood-level rim of a receiving vessel.

Does my water get interrupted during a test?

In most cases, water service needs to be interrupted for five to ten minutes to properly service your backflow preventer.

Why does my water company require annual testing?

Water providers are obligated to supply drinkable water and ensure that connections are protected from contamination. Annual testing ensures compliance with this legal obligation.
