Backflow Freeze Protection: Preventing Costly Winter Damage

Because backflow preventers are installed above ground, they take the full brunt of winter weather. A single hard freeze can crack a brass body overnight — leaving you with an expensive emergency repair, a flooded landscape, and a compliance problem all at once.
Why backflow assemblies freeze
The water trapped inside the assembly expands when it freezes, putting enormous pressure on the body and internal components. Unlike buried pipe, an above-ground backflow preventer has nothing insulating it from the cold. In Northern California, even a few nights below freezing are enough to do damage.
How freeze protection works
The goal is simple: keep the assembly above freezing by trapping ground and residual pipe heat around it. Two solutions do this well:
- Insulated freeze covers / freeze bags — durable, water- and UV-resistant covers sized to your device that hold heat in through cold nights.
- Heated enclosures — for the coldest locations or critical installations.
A quality freeze bag is inexpensive insurance against one of the most common and avoidable backflow failures.
Bonus: protection from theft and vandalism
Because they're exposed, backflow assemblies are also targets for vandalism and metal theft. Steel security cages and lockable enclosures deter tampering and protect your investment — and the water supply behind it.
Get protected before the first freeze
We measure and install insulated covers, freeze bags, and security cages across Northern California. Need just the bag? Our sister company, The Backflow Depot, manufactures USA-made freeze bags in 50+ sizes.
